Keep reading as we begin to delve more into not only 40 Savile Row, but Max’s more personal thoughts and inspirations.
A little bit about yourself, who are you and what do you do?
I have now been working in the luxury retail industry for the last 20 years – starting my career at Gucci within the menswear department at Harrods. Staying at Harrods, I then moved to Zegna where I was the youngest concession department manager for seven years – achieving the highest turnover worldwide per square foot. It was whilst working for Zegna I started to train in made-to-measure. Four years later, I moved to Brioni where I was the deputy store director in the first UK flagship store based in Mayfair. Three years after that I came to 40 Savile Row. I have now been trained in made-to-measure for circa 17 years.
Tell us a bit about the Savile Row Co (the history, the products, location & more):
Based in the heart of London’s Savile Row, we’re a family-run business that has been crafting finely tailored shirts since 1938. We have a store at number 40 under the name ‘40 Savile Row’ and offices around the corner that look after the online side of the business. Whist 40 Savile Row is part of The Savile Row Company brand, our products and services are completely different. At 40 Savile Row we offer bespoke and made-to-measure services, as well as a limited selection of ready-to-wear business/wedding suits – plus dinner garments for those who cannot wait 2-8 weeks for delivery.
What separates 40 Savile Row from the rest?
Our luxury garments are made with the best fabrics and considered timeless. Not only are our products of high-quality, but our employees have been working for this company for over 10 years. We are all well trained and know our business inside out.
Where are “40 Savile Row” suits made?
We have different manufacturing companies, but our own is based in Northern Ireland. These take 4-7 weeks to make, whilst we also have a super express service of three days for shirts and just one week for suits – depending on the season.
Have you ever tailored anyone famous? Any big names that we may know of?
At 40 Savile Row we are very private and we do not disclose any of our client’s identity. However, I can say that I deal with royals, presidents and many other high-profile individuals. Before 40SR, I was fortunate enough to meet President Clinton, Michael Jackson, Daniel Craig and Sir Roger Moore.
Where did you get your first, tailored suit from?
I had my first tailored suit whilst working at Ermenegildo Zegna in Harrods. It was a mix-cashmere blend in powder blue: I always got good comments.
Do you have a favourite suit? If so, what makes them number 1?
My entire wardrobe is made exclusively at 40 Savile Row. I make my own outfits and each garment is unique.
What does being a ‘Gentleman’ mean to you?
Being a gentlemen is a philosophy of life; you behave, you dress and you go about life the best you possibly can.
Who/What inspires you to do what you do?
There is nobody in particular that I look up to, however I always admire people that make an effort. My inspiration comes from within and my roots. As an Italian I feel that it is my duty to be different.
What item of clothing do you believe every gentleman should own?
No man should be without a navy/blue blazer. Whether you’re dressing up or down, it is a timeless piece that can be worn with just about everything.
If you had a phrase or motto to live by, what would it be?
Be good at everything you do.
Finally, how can our social media following, follow the Savile Row Co.?
You can find us online at www.40savilerow.co.uk. There you’ll find the best ways to contact us and book appointments. The store itself isn’t on Instagram, however you can find our online team @SavileRowCo. Whilst the majority of the posts focus on products that they sell, they also share images of some of our bespoke creations and exclusive ready-to-wear.
There we have it, a real insight into Max Ciampi. We love the motto ‘Be good at everything you do’. I think it really sums up Max’s commitment to quality, his customer service etiquette and why he’s been a part of the trade, and so successfully, for so long.
