Whether it’s the working week or the weekend, we could all take some time to slow down and enjoy the ride. This is an art mastered perfectly by Tom Howard, The Gentleman Racer. The Gentleman Racer throws everything cars, lifestyle and heritage into the mix to create a brand that many of us Gent’s will be greatly jealous of.
Keep reading to really delve into Tom Howard and TGR below!
Who is Tom Howard, and what do you do?
I am lifestyle and automotive portrait, The Gentleman Racer. Taking up the mantle of a bygone era - back when Steve McQueen and Paul Newman were battling it out on the track, I look at the fashion, exotic locations and fine heritage behind some of the greatest automobiles on the Planet, sharing my travels through The Gentleman Racer TV - www.youtube.com/thegentlemanracertv
Tell our readers a bit about your brand!
Focusing on the luxury lifestyle that accompanies the automotive and motorsport industry, The Gentleman Racer works seamlessly with brands to incorporate their business plans into exciting and diverse media campaigns to enhance the brand appeal. Whether digital, events, or promotional film, we create a bespoke platform for each client to benefit from and act as a brand extension to further enhance their reach to an engaged audience. Our full portfolio can be found at www.thegentlemanracer.co.uk
Where did the idea of TGR first come from?
The Gentleman Racer started as an outlet to share some of my amazing experiences pictorially throughout Social Media, before blossoming into a fully-fledged company complete with its own media and marketing team. Now we operate Worldwide and boast an enviable portfolio including some of the leading brands in Automotive and Hospitality.
It just shows, if you have an idea - never give up on making something of it. If somebody had said to me a couple of years ago that I would be in the 0.01% of the population that wholeheartedly love their jobs I would have struggled to believe them!
What’s your favourite car and why?
The Jaguar XKSS. Originally produced in 1957, it was arguably the World’s first Supercar! Famously owned and driven by Mulholland resident bad-boy Steve McQueen, it was re-introduced in 2016 as a limited run continuation model using the same production techniques as in the 1950’s. Controversially, I actually prefer the 2016 model, finished in Sherwood Green with a light tan interior!
You feel like you could do with a bit of time to relax, where do you go for a drive?
For me, nothing beats the New Forest in Hampshire, UK on a crisp Sunday morning. Essential travel gear will include Polarised Persol Sunglasses to avoid any solar glare, and a convertible to fully appreciate your front row seat to natures finest back garden. The Rhinefield Ornamental Drive is a particular highlight, and one that I try and get to in every car I’m driving.
What do you tend to do in your free time?
With such a tiring travel schedule, I like to keep in shape at my local gym, trading it in for Country House gyms when on the road, and being in the lifestyle category there are numerous opportunities to stay at some of the best locations for weekends away. Above all, I will be found honing my racing line at Silverstone Circuit most evenings working towards a team entry into next year’s GT Series.
What’s your number one go-to in your wardrobe?
Aside from my Persol 714 Steve McQueen Tortoise Shell Shades, I will nearly always be wearing my Belstaff Redford wax jacket with quilted details. It’s such a versatile piece, being worn over tailored blazers for filming and evenings out, or over a cotton V-neck Tee for a dressed down look.
What item of clothing do you believe every man should own?
Every man should own at least one pair of tailored wool trousers. Wear them with white suede trainers, a round neck tee and a blazer for an everyday sharp silhouette, or dress them up with brogues, a shirt and tie for a classic Gentleman’s look.
How do you keep yourself motivated?
I always try and stay ahead of the curve, and do so by placing myself in challenging situations on a regular basis. It provides the brain with a much needed stimulus to evoke some of the braver business decisions that have shaped The Gentleman Racer thus far! I like to keep abreast of what the competition is doing, but never allow it to affect my judgement on moving TGR forwards.
What does being a ‘Gentleman’ mean to you?
Living by the old fashioned behaviours that I’ve grown up with and building on them to fashion our own niche in the World. Be polite, be respectful, and always remain humble throughout your journey. Being a gentleman is much more than just a word, it’s a lifestyle.
What can we expect from yourself and TGR (over the next year)?
We’ve got some exciting projects in the pipeline, from a Social residence at Maserati, to an outrageous road trip from Switzerland to Monte Carlo for the Formula One. More than anything though, you’ll be joining me on a journey providing the highest quality content with some very special guests all year long!
